on the bum

by corey mesler

We sat on the steps of the library
with second-hand books
under our arms. People mistook
us for sannyasis.
When Jack began to thumb the
pages of his Chimera
I thought he'd had perhaps enough
of the postmodernists.
But we didn't have the kind of relationship
that allowed me to
say when. Myself I longed to get back
to The Sea, The Sea.
But moderation in all things Jim at
the Mission told us.
I looked out over the city in the fading
light. Next to me
Jack chuckled, digesting something
delightful.
